Fellowship for Mediamakers

This is a joint program of the Media Development Foundation and the German organization Media in Cooperation and Transition (MICT), supported by the German Foreign Office.

The Fellowship for Mediamakers’ program is designed for media professionals under 30 and lasts for four months. During this time, participants learn from experienced journalists and acquire the essential skills needed to start their careers. They study journalism standards, master news writing and frontline reporting, conduct interviews on sensitive topics, and explore the fundamentals of investigative journalism. Additionally, they receive training in financial literacy and career development, helping them navigate their professional growth.

Participants also receive a monthly stipend of €700, have access to psychological counseling, can request essential work equipment, and undergo internships at independent Ukrainian newsrooms.

So far, the program has trained 90 young journalists. After completing it, they feel more confident and motivated to advance in the field, define their career paths in journalism, and even secure employment.

I remember how I first came here, and I see how much I have grown. Thank you for giving me faith in myself, the strength to move forward, and for showing me that life — and the people around me — can be different. Thank you for shaping me into a new person through this program.

First and foremost, I am grateful that the program pushed me out of my comfort zone and taught me not to fear trying something new, even without prior experience. I realized that I need to stop underestimating myself — because even if something doesn’t go perfectly, it will still work out, and it won’t be a missed opportunity. Thank you for making me understand that I am not alone.

Participating in the Fellowship for Mediamakers project helped me systematize and deepen the knowledge I had gained through university studies and self-education. Undoubtedly, all the lectures were insightful and valuable. I am immensely grateful to MDF and MiCT for this opportunity, and I want to say that from now on, I feel a strong determination to grow in journalism — and to break this rock!
